As I write this today, there is an incredible line up of speakers waiting to share their ‘idea worth spreading’ on the TEDx Canberra stage. It takes me back to this time 12 months ago when that was me, waiting nervously to share my personal story.
The past year has certainly been one to remember and it all began with 18 minutes on stage at TEDx Canberra this time last year.
Whilst my story may have been born out of pain, this past year has been filled with nothing but joy as I’ve brought to life a project that supports my fellow construction industry workers. I feel so much gratitude for the businesses an individuals who have supported me in some way this past year. I know my approach is a little out of the box and something new for our industry but by saying yes to supporting me, you’ve all shown that you care about the health and wellbeing of your own people.
Here’s my wrap of the year that was…
Mental Health Week, October 2016 I launched the Healthy Tradie Project and with the support of a handful of Canberra builders and contractors opened the minds of hundreds of construction workers across Canberra and Sydney construction sites to the benefits of mindfulness and movement (aka ‘yoga’).
In February this year I jetted off to Sedona, Arizona to spend a week of intensive training with the Baptiste Yoga Institute. My memory of this week – intense and life changing.
In March I was invited to again take to the stage, this time at the MATES in Construction Mental Health in the Workplace Conference. An opportunity to share my lived experience of suicide and guide construction industry leaders on a journey of movement, mindfulness and nutrition, learning how each one affects your health – physically, mentally and emotionally.
My mission is to build a healthier construction industry and throughout the year, there have been a number of local builders and contractors who have joined the Healthy Tradie Tribe! We’ve been on sites and in workplaces teaching nutrition workshops, mindfulness and yoga classes.
One of my goals this year was to make these classes available to the whole construction industry. And I’m pleased to say that from September, in collaboration with the Master Builders Association (ACT) we are now teaching a weekly Tradie Power Yoga class at the MBA! If you work in the construction industry then this class is for YOU! Join us every Wednesday morning 6am at the MBA in Fyshwick.
And to top off what already has been an incredible year, I’m feeling extremely grateful to have been chosen as the recipient of the NAWIC 2017 Innovation Award for Innovation in the Construction Industry.
A huge thank you to all those who have supported me on this journey so far. My cup is full of gratitude. But we’ve only just begun and I look forward to together continuing to build a healthier construction industry.
